How to Buy or Sell on eBay?

Part Three : How to Buy on Ebay

In order to bid or buy you need to register on eBay. There is a link called "Register" at the top of ebay page. Click it and complete the registration form of ebay member. You need to choose a Username, which will be become your identity on eBay. You also will be asked to provide a valid email address and a credit or debit card for verification purposes and them can not be charged later. Once you've completed the form you will receive a confirmation email from eBay to the email address you just submitted. Follow the instructions to verify your email and complete your registration on ebay.   Now let's go back to the listings which we get by browsering or searching on ebay. Click the item's link, then the auction page opens. There are some important information on the page. Check the follow factors, then decide whether to buy:

  • Title/Overview - It lists the basic information of the goods, like item's name, price, shipping price and conditions, seller information and so on.
  • Price - Listed near the top of every item listing. Depending on the type of the listing you're viewing, you'll see one or all of them:
    • Current bid price. This price is similar to the current bid price at a "real" auction—if the current high bidder were to win, this is what he or she would pay. Conversely, if you want to try to win, you must bid a higher amount.
    • Buy it now price. Not all auction listings display a "Buy it now" price. When you see the words "Buy it Now" listed next to a price, you can buy the item immediately for the listed price, without having to outbid other eBay members first.
    • "Reserve not met." When you see this phrase after the current bid price, it means that the seller has selected a secret minimum price, called a "reserve," that has not yet been exceeded by bidding. If bidding does not carry the item's price above the reserve price, the seller can opt not to sell the item to anyone.
    • "Reserve met." When you see "reserve met," it means that the seller set a secret minimum that has already been exceeded by bidding amongst would-be buyers.
  • Description - In the description you'll find all kinds of information about the item, often with photos, possibly including, but not limited to:
    • Features and specifications. Any details about the item, including make, model or vintage, also with features, equipment, or accessories, etc.
    • Condition information. A description of the item's condition, including whether or not the item functions at all, is generally given by the seller in the item description.
    • Photos of the item. It's in the main body of the listing just below the description that you'll see photos of the item. Many buyers only buy the items provide photos, for such a photo allows you to evaluate the item's condition yourself.
    • Additional details about the terms of sale. Sellers are free to list nearly anything or set nearly any terms they want in an item description. As a bidder or buyer, it's your responsibility to have read these terms before you bid or buy—your bid is a statement that you have read and agreed to the seller's terms, whatever they may be.
  • Shipping, payment and return policy - This is where you can find full shipping information, the payment conditions and how the seller's return policy is.
    • Shipping availability. At the bottom of the auction listing you'll find some descripions of the shipping amount, insurance pricing, shipping method, and the aeras availability. Please be careful of DO NOT bid if you fall outside the stated shipment area or if you are unable to receive packages via the stated shipment method.
    • Return policy. eBay is not a retail store and doesn't behave like Wal-Mart when you want to make a return. Please note that you can never make returns unless the seller offers a guarantee either in the item description or in the return policy.
    • Payment methods accepted. Check here and in the item description for details on methods of payment accepted by the seller. Note that these are the only methods of payment the seller accepts. Do not bid if you can't pay using one of the listed methods. It's also common to see "PayPal" listed as a payment method on eBay. PayPal is a payment system that lets users quickly exchange money using checks, credit cards, or other sources of money without having to exchange account information. It is perhaps the most common method of payment in use on eBay.

Once you've checked these and decided which item to buy, it's time to place your bid on ebay or Buy It Now. Let's see how to bid on ebay.

EBay's bidding process works like this: You enter the maximum amount you are willing to pay for the item, and eBay bids incrementally on your behalf until the bidding reaches the maximum amount you entered. So if you decide how much you will to pay item, such $100, you can enter the amount 100 in the bid slot, then press the button "Place Bid". eBay will bid on your behalf from the price now up to your bid in some increments (low-price auctions use very small increments, while high price auctions use larger increments). So if another user comes along and enters his maximum which is below your bid price, for example $90, eBay will bid a little more than his price -like $95 on your behalf, and you'll still be winning. But if another user places a maximum bid beyond your bid price, you'll be outbid (and eBay will send you an e-mail to this effect in case we're not watching the auction). At this point, if you still want the item, you have to enter a new higher bid price.

After you've won, close the deal by making your payment via PayPal or Check or other means. Once you've received your item and are satisfied with it, leave feedback giving your opinion of the transaction. If necessary, resolve any disputes that you have with the seller. Hopefully, of course, this last step is never needed!
