How to Buy or Sell on eBay?

Part Two: Browsing  & Searching on Ebay

You can browse eBay by categories like DVDs & Movies, Clothing & Accessories, Computers & Networking and so on. When you see something you like, you click on the auction link and view the details, including price, pictures, descriptions, payment options and shipping information. If you have a clear idea of what you're seeking, you can search for it using ebay search helpers, by entering the keywords such as "Apple iPod" or using more advanced search criteria that helps narrow the results, such as item location, price range and other conditions.

For example, let's see how to find a cheap iPod nano. There are two ways to go about finding an iPod on ebay. You can browse, or search for it. Let's start by browsing -- it's the slower, more round-about method, but it's a good way to be familiar with the eBay's category system.

The most popular categorie trees are listed right on the eBay homepage, on the left side. iPods are typically considered as consumer electronics items, so the Consumer Electronics category is a good place to start browsing. after we click on the Consumer Electronics link on the homepage, we open a new page listing all of the Consumer Electronics.

At the top of the page, you can see that there's actually a subcategory called Apple iPod, MP3 Players, and within that subcategory is another subcategory called Apple iPod.

It seems good. Clicking on "Apple iPod" brings us to an auction-level page:

On this page, you can see that:

  • There are 11213 listings in the Apple iPod category.
  • The listings are currently sorted by time, with the newest auctions first.
  • We can search within iPod listings.

Since we're looking specifically for an iPod nano, "iPod nano" is a good term to use to narrow the results. Then we click the  iPod Nano label on the left sidebar. It opens a new listing page and the result number narrows to 3538.  Here's what comes up:

Is it simply? Next, let's see how to search on ebay. If you're just looking for a bargain on some type of collectible, browsing is the best way to find the lists; but if you're looking for something specific, the eBay search function is the quickest way to get it.

At the top of the eBay page, there's a search box where we can enter the keywords of what we're looking for. For this example, we enter "iPod nano".

Here's what comes up in our simple keyword search: We got 3538 listings in the result page. Is it fast? On the next part, let's see how to buy an iPod on ebay.
